SERAC Meeting Minutes – June 23, 2004

Olmsted Medical Center      Conf. RM  4-3    1:30 P.M.

Rochester, MN

The meeting followed a talk by Dr. Todd Mahr, asthma and allergy specialist from Gunderson-Lutheran in La Crosse (and seeing patients in Winona and La Crescent.)

Todd is also a SERAC member.

Members Present:  Marty Aleman, Tim Erlandson, Jackie Heying, David Lowe, Julie Reed, Barbara Yawn, Judy Wothke

Members were welcomed and introduced.

Discussion centered on attracting community members to the coalition and involving members directly in programming.   The members felt that community based education deserved time and effort, and that while professional education is very important, our fall focus would be related to schools and the community.   Much of the meeting time was devoted to the need to make coaches of youth sports – both school and community based – aware of their role with student-athletes who have asthma.  It was decided to target coaches especially for the fall and into the coming year.  Barbara suggested that we start with realistic goals of 1 or 2 programs, and then move from there.

Key messages related to safety and performance are to be developed by Jackie, Julie,  Judy and Barbara and edited via e-mail.

Marty suggested August 19 as a possible date in the Rochester Schools.

Tim will contact appropriate people at the YMCA’s.

Jackie will check with the athletic director in her school who has connections with the State High School League.

We agreed that being able to speak at existing coaches meetings, such as fall inservice programs, conference meetings, etc. made the most sense.

Judy will work on recruiting new community-based members for SERAC.

Prior to the meeting, all members received, by mail, a MAC information packet including:
